Why Great Coaches Struggle to Close Clients (and the Fix)
If you are great at what you do and sales calls still feel awkward, draining or inconsistent, this one is for you.
Not because you need better scripts. Not because you need a better funnel. And definitely not because you are bad at sales. It is because you were taught the wrong definition of selling.
I work with coaches, consultants, creators and heart centered professionals who genuinely help people. They are ethical, skilled and they care deeply. And yet, when a conversation shifts from connection to commitment, everything tightens. They hesitate. They over explain. They give way too much away and walk off their calls drained instead of energized.
Episode 98 of The Purpose Chasers is a solo episode about why that happens and how to close clients by having better conversations, not by pushing harder.
People Do Not Buy When They Are Convinced
Most sales trainings teach you what to say. Very few teach you how to lead a conversation. You get handed scripts, you are taught to overcome objections, you are told to manufacture urgency and scarcity. Here is what all of that misses.
"People don't buy when they're convinced. They buy when their internal conflict collapses."
Pressure creates resistance. Logic creates delay. Inspiration without pain creates inaction. Real sales do not happen in the intellect. They happen underneath it. That is why so many heart centered professionals feel gross trying to sell. They are forcing something that is meant to emerge.
The 4 Breakdowns That Kill a Sales Call
If your calls are not converting consistently, it is almost never the offer. It is usually one of these 4 things.
1. Rapport stays surface level. You are friendly but not grounded. Likable but not anchored. Rapport is not small talk. It is emotional safety, and people only move when they feel safe enough to tell the truth.
2. Pain gets identified but not experienced. Most coaches name the pain. Very few help the client feel it. There is a massive difference between "that sounds frustrating" and "I can see how this has been quietly eroding your confidence." Pain that stays intellectual never converts.
3. Hope gets introduced too early. Hope feels good, and if you use it too soon it kills sales. Selling possibility before the pain is integrated creates emotional highs, false certainty and buyer's remorse. That is why people say yes and then disappear.
4. The cost of inaction never gets addressed. If staying the same still feels safe, there is no reason to change. Later is the most expensive word in business.
The Moment Everything Shifts
There is a moment on powerful sales calls where everything changes. Not because of a clever close, not because of urgency, not because of a discount. It happens when the client realizes something uncomfortable and freeing at the same time:
"I'm not questioning your value. I'm questioning my own."
That is the epiphany moment. Responsibility returns to the client without pressure. And that is why the best closes do not sound like selling. They sound like clarity.
Quick story. There are 3 frogs on a log. One decides to jump off. How many frogs are left? Three. Because deciding to jump is not the same as jumping. Most people live their entire lives on the log. I will start when I am ready. I need more clarity. Next month will be better. Action creates clarity. Clarity does not create action.
Why Proof Belongs in Every Sales Conversation
Sales is not about getting someone to say yes. It is about helping them stop lying to themselves. When it is done right, sales restore agency, reinforce self trust and create momentum. That is why the best clients stay longer, re enroll, refer others and, most importantly, become testimonials.
"You can argue marketing. You cannot argue with a real customer. Customer emotion is the most underused currency in business. Testimonials collapse sales cycles. They transfer trust instantly, and they pre-handle objections. Ads rent attention. Testimonials own it."
If every call starts cold, you are already behind. Your booking calendar should be asking questions that pre frame the commitment before you ever talk: What is not working for you anymore? What are you afraid will happen if nothing changes? And remember that time and money are not objections. They are fear. Fear it will not work, fear they will fail again, fear they will be disappointed. Fear does not get resolved with logic. It gets resolved through belief transfer. That is why pushing harder fails and holding firmer converts.
The full structure is rapport, pain, hope, cost of inaction, epiphany and the invitation. I do not teach scripts. I teach structure. The deeper version of this is in the Social Proof System, because the fastest way to transfer belief is to let a past client do it for you.
What Changes When Your Clients Carry the Proof
Kerrie Fleming is a light worker who found it hard to describe her own work. Then her clients described it for her on video:
"Doing these video testimonials with my clients has been a game changer for me personally and feeling what my true value is as a light worker. Like sometimes it's hard for me to describe what I do, especially because it's always evolving and expanding. And to have your client actually say the words and explaining it from their viewpoint is perfect."
Steph Stanton leads the Held Sacred community. I interviewed nine of her women on video. What the testimonials did for her:
"Having the testimonials as this feeling of safety that goes out is to me worth 10 times what I paid you. I don't have to do the heavy lifting anymore to show that this group is valid. Yes, I've gotten new clients since you gathered the testimonials."
