Sean Douglas of The Success Corps on The Purpose Chasers Podcast Ep. 79 with Mark Crandall

Sean Douglas: From the Air Force to a Speaking Career

October 19, 2026•4 min read

The Air Force told Sean Douglas he was going to Korea. He said no. They told him they would kick him out. He was in his retirement year anyway, so he pushed the button and retired.

Then he went to school for his CDL as a backup plan, drove a truck part time through 2021 and 2022, and kept running leadership trainings on the side until the speaking business could carry him. That is the part of the speaker success story nobody puts on the sizzle reel, and it is why I wanted Sean on Episode 79 of The Purpose Chasers.

The Turning Point Was Positioning

Sean was a non commissioned officer deep in a successful military career, already speaking, podcasting and showing up at Podfest and Podcast Movement. When he went full time, the thing that changed was not his talk. It was how he positioned it.

"The turning point was the positioning, using category design to say, hey, event planner, what problem can I solve for you? And ultimately, the event planner doesn't want a speaker that sucks. Doesn't want a speaker that's boring. They want something dynamic, high energy, interactive, engaging."

That is category design in one sentence: stop describing yourself and start describing the problem you solve for the person who books you. Sean now runs The Success Corps and trains artists, producers and entrepreneurs to do the same thing on stage.

Relationships Build Bank Accounts

I asked Sean how he stays mentally fit when the nos come in, and his answer is the best one I have ever gotten to that question. He still gets a couple of nos in his inbox and feels it. He leans into the discomfort instead of avoiding it. And then he replies to every rejection the same way, by offering a relationship instead of asking for anything.

"I'm not in it for the bank account. I'm in it for the relationship. And relationships build bank accounts. So I'm not here to build the money. I'm building the relationship because money is a byproduct of the relationship."

If you go into business transactions with the motive of building money, you create resentment and turnover. If you go in with the motive of building relationships, you stay free of resentment and the money shows up as a byproduct. I clipped that one for myself.

Failure Gives the Test First and the Lesson Second

"Every failure is a learning opportunity for you to rise 1% more than you were yesterday."

Sean's advice to everyone is to learn gratitude and acceptance, and then to actually study the failures, not just the wins.

"Success leaves clues, but failure is the only thing in life that will give you the test first and the lesson second."

Open Loops, Close Loops, and Proof

Sean is a master of opening and closing loops in a talk so people act at the end without feeling sold. That is a psychology strategy, and it is the same one I use in marketing: open the loop with a real client's problem, close it with the result in their own words. A past client on video is the most honest call to action there is, and it is the backbone of the Social Proof System.

What Speakers Say When Their Proof Is Handled

Dr. Carolyn Colleen wanted to clean up her visibility online and did not know where to start. Now her funnels are connected and the right people are finding her. Her summary:

"No fluff, just targeted SEO."

Aurora Potts came to my workshop knowing only that she needed something more within herself. How she left:

"Now I am awakened. I feel reborn. And I couldn't be more excited about the future."
