Sal Liberti on Breathwork, Mastery and Going Home to Peru
Some callings do not push you forward. They pull you home.
I remember a conversation with Sal Liberti when he was on the fence: keep leading a program for a man he had served for a long time, or shoot off and go explore what he believed he was called to do. He chose the calling. Episode 99 of The Purpose Chasers is the tale of what happened next, told by one of the most beautiful humans I know.
The Child Actor Who Learned to Stop Pretending
Sal was a child actor in Peru. His father had been a television personality there since he was 19 or 20, starting on radio when they still played records. Sal looked up to that, and the acting became what he now calls media training. But it also pushed him toward a decision.
"I am done pretending to be all these other things and I need to find a path that I can be myself in and help people in it, because that was always a calling."
When we met he was doing sales for a mastermind, fresh off crewing Tony Robbins events. Then he bought a one way ticket from Miami to Madrid and told everyone he was moving to Europe. Hostel after hostel, person after person, he learned the lesson he loves retelling: nobody out there cares about the version of you that you have been performing. You get to start clean.
Breathwork as the Bridge
During COVID, Sal went deep into yoga and found breathwork. He describes it as the bridge between doing personal development and actually embodying it. And because he came to it with a sales background, an NLP background and years of watching how Tony Robbins leads a room, he refused to become one more spiritual guy with good vibes and no craft.
Mastery, for Sal, is built through presence, repetition and responsibility. Not through digital scale and not through trends.
Called Back, Not Forward
Here is the part of the story that reframed how I think about niching down. Sal had built an English language online breathwork platform. It was working. He shut it down.
"It became a chore, and because I have been called to serve the Latin American market."
"I was born in Lima, Peru, and now I live there again. My family immigrated to the United States in 2004 when I was eight years old, and 20 years later I moved back to Peru. I went back to where I came from, willingly, and it's been one of the most amazing experiences to connect with my roots and understand that my place to serve isn't perhaps all the time here in the States or in English."
Plenty of people run yoga and breathwork retreats in Peru. They fill the funnel from the outside and bring people in. Sal is doing the opposite.
"I'm in Peru and the mission is not bring everybody else to Peru. It's thread this fabric of Peruvians reconnecting with their essence, with the wisdom and with the land that we were born on."
"I'm not being called to serve the gringos that want to come. I'm being called to serve the Peruvians that are here, that are desperate for this, that are asking for this."
Today that looks like monthly holotropic style breathwork ceremonies in Lima, now hosted at a 5 star hotel with 50 to 60 people in the room, corporate wellness programs, and retreats in the Sacred Valley that support local conservation. Hyperlocal, in his first language, for the people who were asking.
What Hyperlocal Work Teaches About Proof
Sal chose alignment over scale, and his business got clearer, not smaller. For a healer or facilitator who works with real people in a real room, the marketing problem is simple: the people who were not in the room cannot feel what happened. A participant describing it on video carries the room to them. That is the whole idea behind the Social Proof System, and it is why I interviewed Sal himself years ago about his own experience in my workshop.
What Sal Said Back Then
Sal went from a people pleaser to someone who knows what he is worth. In his words:
"Mark stepped in and he drew a boundary for me and allowed me to assert myself."
Aurora Potts came to my workshop knowing only that she needed something more within herself. How she left:
"Now I am awakened. I feel reborn. And I couldn't be more excited about the future."
