No Such Thing as Pressure: 4 Leadership Lessons From the Solo Episodes
Are you tired of letting other people make decisions for you? Pressured by your environment, by society, by family, into a path you did not choose?
I recorded a run of short solo episodes of The Purpose Chasers between 2020 and 2022 about leading yourself and leading a team. These 4 belong together. Each one is under 25 minutes and each one came out of a specific mistake I made.
1. Why There Is No Such Thing as Pressure or Persuasion (Ep. 44)
Outside influences can be the vehicle that gets you somewhere, but the choice is always yours, and most of us never give ourselves credit for the choices we actually make. This episode is a 3 step process for never being pressured or persuaded in your decision making again. The point is ownership: other people cannot live your life for you, so stop handing them the freedom to decide it.
2. The Power of Your Circle: Stop Trying to Look Good (Ep. 47)
Why do we feel like we always need to look good? Our friends, family and communities want to see our most authentic selves, and yet we show up pretending everything is handled. This one is about masterminding, the direction I was taking the show, and the rule I still live by: the more vulnerable and authentic you can get out of the gate, the better off you are for it.
3. What Came From Shutting Out the Noise (Ep. 64)
In 2020 I went inward. I paused Purpose Chasers, put my head down and did the inner work, and I removed the pressure and noise from my life, online and offline. In less than 2 years I gained real insight, built strong relationships, scaled businesses, and my second son was born. This was the first solo episode I recorded after that silence, and it set the mission I am still on: help owners put the systems in place, grow the right team and track the metrics so they can take back their most precious asset, which is time.
4. You Are a Reflection of Your Team (Ep. 67)
I recorded this after terminating 2 people who were near and dear to me. Letting go of employees who are like friends and family is one of the hardest decisions I have made in business, and the most valuable takeaway was the question nobody asks: how can I do better? What areas can I improve to future proof the relationships in and out of my company?
When you own your mistakes and treat people equally, you create an accountability structure everyone can pick up on. And the flip side matters just as much. Praise and appreciation, pointing out your team's achievements, is how they know you are investing in their growth and their security. The balance between praise and demand is the whole job.
The Lesson Underneath
Every one of these episodes is about ownership. Owning your choices, owning your mistakes, owning your time. The place most owners refuse to take ownership is their marketing, because it is easier to blame an agency or an algorithm than to ask a customer what they really think. Asking is the whole move. It is why I built the Social Proof System around 3 simple questions, and why the owners who ask them end up with a team, and a customer base, that reflects them well.
What It Sounds Like When Your Customers Reflect You
Bud Heaton talks about spotting the small opportunities most owners overlook: where leads come from, communication, the sales process and the systems behind it. His phrase for it:
"Get the water to the end of the road, so to speak."
Keith of Sundanced Wood carves signs and art by hand in Sugar Loaf, New York. He wanted a website that told the story of his pieces and the people who own them. His verdict:
"What Mark has done to this website and the entire process from the testimonials with everybody has been exactly what I needed, what Sundanced Wood needed. He's an artist, like there's no doubt about it."
