Gino Barbaro: Escaping the 90 Hour Work Week
Gino Barbaro owned a restaurant for 25 years and worked 90 hours a week to do it. Today he and his partner Jake own more than 1,100 multifamily units, and he mentors thousands of students through Jake and Gino.
He was one of my very first guests, back in Episode 3 of The Purpose Chasers, and the conversation is about the exact moment he decided to exit the rat race. If you feel like your business owns you instead of the other way around, this is your wake up call.
25 Years in the Restaurant
There is nothing glamorous about a 90 hour week in a kitchen. Gino did it for a quarter of a century. What changed was not the restaurant. It was what he started feeding his mind. He engulfed himself in personal development, and that is the only way he knows to break a mediocre pattern: you cannot think your way out of a life with the same inputs that built it.
Coaching and Real Estate as the Way Out
Gino used 2 vehicles to buy his freedom. The first was coaching, both receiving it and later giving it. The second was multifamily real estate, built on the Wheelbarrow Profits system he and Jake teach: buy right, manage right, finance right. Together they scaled past 1,100 units and turned the method into a mentoring brand that has taught thousands of students.
And he did it as a father of 6, which is the part of the episode I care about most. The point of leverage is not more money. It is being present for what matters while the business runs.
What This Episode Taught Me About Marketing
Gino did not scale Jake and Gino with hype. He scaled it the way every durable brand does: real students, real deals, real results, told by the people who lived them. When someone is deciding whether to trust a mentor with their money and their time, the thing that convinces them is not the mentor's pitch. It is another student saying what happened.
That is the whole reason I built the Social Proof System. It took me from a construction company that was -$403,276 in the accounts to a business I could walk away from. Gino bought his freedom with doors. I bought mine with customer stories. The principle is the same: build the asset once and let it work.
What Students and Clients Say When You Ask
Justina Reaves is a public speaker, a coach and a top leader in network marketing. When 2020 hit she had to get her business online, but she did not have time to learn funnels, leads and drip campaigns. Her verdict:
"Mark has transformed my vision into reality."
Sarah Jones had wanted to get her business online for a long time and did not know how to start a landing page. We built two full landing pages and every automation in Go HighLevel, then recorded a walkthrough so she was comfortable running it herself. In her words:
"He did a great job and I'll definitely be using him again."
