Joseph Hughes: You Can't Run a Facebook Ad and Call It Marketing
Every contractor knows the feeling. You pay for a lead, 3 other companies get the same phone number, and by the time you call back the homeowner has already picked someone. You did not buy a customer. You bought a race to the bottom.
Joseph Hughes saw that trap before most of the industry did. I recorded this conversation with him in 2020 and sat on it for 5 years, which was a mistake, because his argument matters more now than it did then: the trades were never taught to market, and buying leads is not marketing.
Who Is Joseph Hughes?
Joseph is the founder of Contractor Dynamics, which trains roofing and contracting companies to run their own marketing instead of renting it from an agency. He came to it honestly. In his words:
"I'm a sixth generation member of family business, which is Hughes Marine, a barge and tugboat company based here in New Jersey, and they have a shipyard up in Brooklyn."
He left that 125 year old family business in 2012. He called it the most difficult conversation of his life, and he left on good terms, which he points out is rare. Everything he teaches contractors about trust comes from how he was raised:
"Just doing the right thing is always the right thing. Ethics above everything else. Being transparent with your intentions. Building real relationships."
Why Buying Leads Kills a Contractor's Reputation
Joseph grew Contractor Dynamics the slow way: contractor SEO and content first, then paid social to pour fuel on a fire that was already burning. He still holds back on ad spend on purpose.
"We hold back on advertising spend because I don't want to grow too quickly and sacrifice the quality that we're delivering for our clients."
That restraint comes from knowing his audience. Every contractor has been burned by somebody who could run ads and called themselves a marketing company.
"Every contractor's been burned before, right? So the last thing I want to be is another marketing company that they've tried and it hasn't worked out."
Here is the line from the episode that became the title of this post. You cannot just run a Facebook ad and expect your business to blow up. These are humans. You have to properly onboard them and take care of them, and they have to know, like and trust you before they will buy from you.
What the Homeowner Is Actually Thinking
The best part of this episode is when Joseph flips the camera around and talks about the person hiring a contractor. His advice is to start where they are.
"Think about what they're hesitant about. It's hard to find someone. It takes up time. You're not sure who to trust. You're worried that you're gonna lose money and it's not going to work out."
Read that again and notice what it is: a list of objections. Reviews, photos of finished jobs and customers on video are the only things that answer those objections before you ever get on the phone. Ads cannot do it. Only proof can.
What This Looks Like When You Do It
I lived Joseph's argument. I took ownership in a construction company that was -$403,276 in the accounts, and we had no proof we could do the new service we were launching. So I was on the job site taking photos of every step, and when the first project was done I asked the homeowner for a video testimonial in front of his house. That became the Social Proof System I still run today, and it is why that company grew to $6.4 million on under $5,000 a month in marketing.
The trades are not the only place this works. Keith of Sundanced Wood carves signs by hand and had been avoiding a website for years because every web guy wanted to build him a cookie cutter site with no story in it.
What a Tradesman Says When the Story Is Told Right
Keith of Sundanced Wood carves signs and art by hand in Sugar Loaf, New York. He wanted a website that told the story of his pieces and the people who own them. His verdict:
"What Mark has done to this website and the entire process from the testimonials with everybody has been exactly what I needed, what Sundanced Wood needed. He's an artist, like there's no doubt about it."
